Imagine turning up to your local athletics meet and sprinting against Usain Bolt. Or, at a park cricket match, batting against Brett Lee. You’d lose every single time, but still, what an experience!
For me – a cycling-obsessed fanboy – last Saturday’s John Beatty Handicap was a bit like that. I had the privilege of racing against, and almost instantly being dropped by, one of the strongest cyclists in Australia. A pretty awesome encounter for this club-level B-grader.
